Why are hydrogen valleys important?
Hydrogen can become an important contributing energy carrier in the decarbonization of energy- intensive industrial processes and transportation and is an important part of the EU’s strategies for a green transition. However, the market for sustainable hydrogen is in its infancy and, although ambitious plans exist, few projects have been realized.
The development of hydrogen valleys – hydrogen ecosystems with high value chain coverage that bring together multiple end-use sectors – can demonstrate functioning hydrogen value chains and showcase the versatility of hydrogen applications.
The data presented on this site covers Nordic hydrogen valleys, hydrogen hotspots and other relevant hydrogen projects in the Nordics.
Hydrogen valley
Nordic hydrogen valleys are projects that:
- Cover a specific geography in at least one Nordic country
- Cover at least two steps of the hydrogen value chain (production ➔ distribution ➔ use)
- Have a hydrogen production capacity exceeding 500 tpa
- Supply hydrogen to at least two different end-use sectors
- Have at least reached the feasibility phase (i.e., are working on a feasibility study)
Hydrogen hotspot
Hydrogen hotspots are projects that fulfill:
- Criterion 1 and
- At least 2 of criteria 2-5 in the “Nordic hydrogen valley” definition
Other hydrogen projects: Potentially interesting hydrogen projects that were identified in the mapping but failed to meet the definition of a hydrogen valley or a hydrogen hotspot
